Turning off the Windows XP firewall

Windows XP comes with built-in firewall software that is turned on by default when you create a network connection. Firewalls are designed to protect your computer by closing unnecessary network openings, or ports, on your system that hackers or viruses might use to enter your system. However, some programs need to use these openings in order to work properly. If you install any software that uses the Internet that doesn't seem to be working, try turning off the firewall for your network connection and see if that makes a difference.

To turn off the Windows XP firewall, do the following:

  1. Click on the Start button, choose All Programs, then choose Connect To and then Show all connections.
  2. Right-click on the icon for your Internet connection and choose Properties from the pop-up window.
  3. In the window that appears, click on the Advanced tab and uncheck Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet.
  4. Click the OK button. You have now turned off the firewall.
