Turning off the Windows XP firewall Windows XP comes with built-in firewall software that is turned on by default when you create a network connection. Firewalls are designed to protect your computer by closing unnecessary network openings, or ports, on your system that hackers or viruses might use to enter your system. However, some programs need to use these openings in order to work properly. If you install any software that uses the Internet that doesn't seem to be working, try turning off the firewall for your network connection and see if that makes a difference.
